Abstract

The current nursing shortage is a serious problem at all levels of nursing nurses’ commitment is currently facing great challenge to nursing administrations . Commit is an antecedents of mention to leave the workplace and turnover, which is costly to any organization in terms of money , expertise and knowledge as well as care quality . Many researchers showed that relationship behavior of nurse managers have a great impact on nurses’ commitment .
Hence the present study aims to identify the relationship between leadership behaviors of head nurses and Nurses’ ” organizational commitment ; using five relationship behaviors of challenging the process ; enabling other to act ; inspiring a shared vision ; modeling the war and encouraging the heart
Setting:
The study was conducted in all patient general medical & surgical units at Alexandria main University Hospital ( 1724 beds ) the capacity of the surgical units beds were 773 , and the capacity of the medical units were 9511 bed the numbers of inpatient units included in the study were 35 units : 16 medical units , and 14 surgical units with (5) 3 medical and 2 surgical unit in the 6 th floor which provide private services for medical and surgical inpatient . The average number of nurses working in each medical unit ranged from 8- 18 nurses , and in surgical unit ranged from 9to 30 nurses
Subjects :
1- Subject of the study included all head nurses who were available at the time of data collection in the previous mentioned units , with at least one year experience in managerial positions ( N= 35) , they were distributed as ( n= 17) in Surgical units ( n= 18) medical units
2- All bedside nurses who were working at the time of data collection in the previous units ( N= 400) they were distributed as (n= 244) in surgical units , and (n= 156) in medical units
Tools: The study used two tools for data collection namely : leadership practice inventory scale organizational commitment scale , in addition to a sheet of demographics characteristics of the subject
Leader ship practice inventory
Leader ship practice inventory questionnaire developed by kouzes & Posner ( 1995) . It was used to measure leadership behaviors as perceived by head nurses and nursing staff through reference to ” self ” and shared vision ,( (3) Model the way, (4) Encourage the heart , and (5) Enable others to act . Six statement was used to measure each of the five key leadership practice , and response to each subscale were measured on a five point likert rating scale ranging from 1 Never to ”5” alawys.
