Abstract Sixty patients who had vitreoretinal procedures were classified into 5 groups: group (1) including 15 cases who had vitrectomy, group (2) including 10 cases of encircling buckles, group (3) including 10 cases of combined vitrectomy and encircling buckles, group (4) including 15 cases of local buckles and group (5) including 10 cases of local and encircling buckles. Corneal topography and specular microscopy were done preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 week, 1 month and 6 months. Results: Regarding topographic changes, 1 case (7%) of the vitrectomy group showed a superotemporal steepening while 17 cases (85%) of encircling buckles (whether alone or combined with vitrectomy) showed corneal steepening either central (25%) or generalized (60%). 7 cases (70%) of local buckles showed steepening towards the buckle. 10 cases (100%) of combined local and encircling buckles showed both generalized and astigmatic steepening. Changes of all groups reached their maximum at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively then gradually decreased without reaching preoperative values at the end of follow up period at 6 months. These changes were statistically significant. Regarding specular microscopic changes, 4 cases (26.6 %) having vitrectomy showed decrease of cell density (CD), increase of average cell size and coefficient of variation (CV) after migration of silicone oil to the AC. 3 cases ( 20%) of combined vitrectomy and encircling buckles showed endothelial changes after migration of silicone oil or residual PFC to the anterior chambre. No cases of local, encircling and combined local and encircling buckles showed endothelial changes. Specular microscopic changes were statistically insignificant. |
