Abstract This thesis demonstrates the benefits of using the fuzzy logic control by comparing it with conventional digital control in the field of process control using a liquid level process as an example. The fuzzy logic controller is compared with two digital conventional controllers in two cases: the set-point changes and the load changes. The level process is modeled and the parameters of each element in it is determined. Using the fuzzy rules which are obtained by the design engineer, the fuzzy logic controller is designed and the response is derived by simulation for different cases. A linearization technique is used to approximate the nonlinear differential equation of the level process by a linear differential equation, then three conventional digital control algorithms are designed for the linearized model and different cases and operational aspects are studied. The parameters which are determined from the design steps for the linearized model are used in designing the digital conventional controllers for the actual nonlinear model. Comparing the response of the fuzzy logic controller with the responses of the proportional, and proportional plus integral plus derivative controller provides higher accuracy in a shorter time intervals . |
