Abstract

The mechanism of hydrotropy has been the subject of several recent research articles which have been reviewed in the introduction of this thesis. The present study has
been designed to test the hypothesis of Badwan et al (lo) that hydrotropic salts aggregate at critical concentration and the suggestion of Saleh et al (93) that these salts affect the water structure to a more hydrophobic mode.
In the first part of this thesis, we have investigated
some physico—chemical properties of certain hydrotropic salt solutions.
In the first chapter, the aqueous solubility of three hydrotropic salts, sodium benzoate, sodium salicylate and sodium gentisate was investigated. The solubility increases in the following order,
sodium salicylate> sodium benzoate> sodium gentisate This order has been attributed to the affinity of each salt for molecular aggregation of the stack type. The results also indicated that the solubility of sodium benzoate and sodium salicylate is very slightly affected by temperature. On the other hand, the solumility of sodium gentisate is greatly affected by temperature. The effect of normal electrolytes on the solubility of sodium benzoate and sodium salicylate showed that the sodium benzoate aggregates are more hydrophobic compared to the aggregates of sodium s alicylate.
