Abstract This thesis is devoted to study heat transfer in the soil below cold stores to determine the critical conditions of soil freezing and the equivalent amount of heat to prevent it. Heat transfer in the soil depends greatly on its thermal properties. Therefore, thermal properties of three different samples representing sandy, sandy clayey and clayey soils were examined experimentally using the line heat source method. The effect of temperature on both thermal conductivity and diffusivity of dry and wet samples with moisture content up to 40% on dry weight basis was investigated at different temperatures which vary from - l0°C to 35°C. In order to estimate the heat exchange between the soil and a cold store, the initial and boundary condi¬tions of the soil is required. Therefore, the depen¬dence of soil temperature on both time and depth was analyzed. The soil surface temperature variation was assumed to be in the form of a sine-wave. The analysis was applied to calculate daily and annual temperature variation for Alexandria and evaluate heat flux and damping depth. |
