Abstract

In this study various classifications of myopia, the etiologic aspectsand factors affecting myopia, central and peripheral pathological funduschanges in myopia were outlined. The aim of this work was to study theprevalence of fundus changes in myopic Egyptian patients presented to theout-patient clinic of the ophthalmology department of Zagazig UniverstiyHospital in 2004.
The population of this study included 600 eyes of 300 patients withbilateral myopia of different degrees. Full histories were taken andcomplete ophthalmic examinations were done for each case. Refractionwas done to estimate the degree of myopia in each eye. This was followedby direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, colouredfundus photography and finally fluorescein angiography to detect centraland peripheral fundus changes.
The results were tabulated and statistically correlated to detect theprevalence of various central and peripheral pathological fundus changesin different degrees of myopia.
Several conclusions can be made from this study. They are listed inthis section below:
•Myopia is more common in the fourth decade of life (28%).
•In this study females are more likely to be affected by myopia thanmales, with a ratio of about 1.5 : 1.
•There is an inverse correlation between the absolute visual acuityand the degree of myopia.
•Low, moderate and high degrees of myopia are all affected withcentral and peripheral fundus changes
