Abstract

EFFECT OF CA-SILICATE SLAG AND PHOSPHORUS ON CUCUMBER AND ITS RESIDUAL EFFECT ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO
1- First experiment.
This investigation was conducted in the two successive summer seasons of 1997 and 1998 to study the effect of Ca-silicate slag and phosphorus application levels on the growth and yield of cucumber cultivar ”Madina”. Cucumber seeds were sown on the 15th of March in both seasons, respectively.
The experiment was carried out at the private farm in AL-koum AL-Akhader village, Maghagha district, EL-Minia Governorate, Egypt.
1- Calcium silicate slag was brought from Egyptian Iron and Steel company. The chemical analysis of this slag was Fe 21.5%,8-12% Si02, 46% Ca, 3.5% Mg, 0.4% H203, 8.13 P20S and 0.15% S. This slag was applied in the main plots at four level i.e. 0.0; 4.5, 6.0 and 7.5 tons/fed.
2- Phosphorus treatments in the form of Superhosphate (15.5% P205) were applied in the sub-plots at three levels i.e.; 0.0, 100 and 200 kg P205/fed.
Slag significantly increased plant length, In both seasons.
Similar results were obtained with phosphorus.
2- Number of branches/plant:-
Slag significantly increased this character with 7.5 ton/fed in both seasons. Phosphorus fertilizer had insignificant effect in both seasons. The interaction between slag and phosphorus was only significant but only in the first season.
3- Fruit length (cm):-
Slag had significantly increased on this character in both season. Similar results with phosphorus treatments. The interaction between slag and phosphorus was significant in both seasons.
4- Fruit diameter (cm):-
Slag had insignificant effect on this character in both seasons.
Regarding to the phosphorus, this character was significantly affected but only in the first season.
