Abstract

During the past decade a number of researchers have showed the impact of lack of knowledge on the part of nursing staff working in the mental health field in the developing countries as it affects patient recovery.
In Egypt the problems of nursing as a whole and those of psychiatric nursing specifically are well known.
Nurses are thrown into the mental hospital without adequate preparation and qualify action for that job and may be sending there even for punishment.
The success of any mental health program is dependent upon the existence of highly qualified and well trained nursing personnel.
Abode of knowledge has a bearing on the quality of nursing care afforded to psychiatric patients.
Psychiatric units in Alexandria mental hospitals have great potentials for providing good psychiatric care for patients.
This can only be achieved when the nursing staffs develop more knowledge and better understanding.
Hence the idea of investigating the nurses’ knowledge originated.
