Abstract In our research we study the catastrophic childhood epilepsy in infants presented with developmental delay in association with seizures. This study was conducted in Zagazig University Hospital, Pediatric department, during the period from September 2005 to June 2006 , on 40 children selected on the basis of developmental delay in association with presence of seizures . The studied group were divided into two groups: Group I : → Developmentally delayed infants with infantile spasms. Group II: → Developmentally delayed infants with other types of seizures. The two groups are then compared regarding age, gender , family history ,Tone , organomegaly , cutaneous manifestations as regard neurocutaneous syndromes notably tuberos sclerosis , abnormal features , EEG findings , CT Findings , chromosomal analysis and results of TORCH screen and reducing substances in urine. Infantile spasms were present in 22.5 % of cases and 44.4 % of them developed also other types of seizures and it was the commonest type of seizures occurred in developmentally delayed infants. No significant statistical difference was found between the two groups as regarding age, sex, family history, clinical manifestations as regard head circumference, tone, abnormal features, organomegaly and cutaneous manifestations of neurocutaneous syndromes apart from association of group I with tuberous sclerosis which was statistically significant.Aim Of The Work The aim of this work is to discuss the relationship between developmental delay associated with seizures and the presence of infantile spasm. |
