المستخلص Experts at the WHO believe that the world has now come closer to another influenza pandemic than at any other time. Avian influenza (H5N1) is becoming one of the serious public health threats in Egypt. Egypt confirmed the first human case in February 2006, as of June 2008, 50 human cases were confirmed with 22 deaths. The current study aimed at testing the effect of medical education in improving knowledge of medical students regarding avian influenza. Self administered questionnaire was applied to two groups of students, group one including 200 of the first academic year students and group two including 200 of the fourth academic year students. The study revealed that most of the basic characteristics of both groups were nearly the same. Although, the level of knowledge was higher among the fourth year students than the first year students but still unsatisfactory. The mean total knowledge score was 43.2 ± 8.1 among the first year students and 52.9 ± 8.5 among the fourth year students with statistically significant difference. It is recommended that to improve the quality of the medical education curriculum to cover weak points in knowledge of the students. |
