Abstract The diagnosis of malabsorption syndrome is made cli- ically in any infant or child with failure to thrive , abdominal distension and the passage of pale, bulky, foul smelling stools • However, there is no single clinical feature co~on to all defects of absorption and no single diagnostic technique which can be relied upon to show an abnormality in every case of malabsorption. A careful history and physical examination are basic for the diagnosis of specific malabsorption disorders • A precise feeding history, the type and time of onset of symptoms , and the character of stools excreted should be obtained • The feeding history is necessary because cer- tain diseases are related to the introduction of speci- fic nutrients into the diet. The prognosis in malabso~tion syndromes is variable. Some diseases can be completely cured since their patho- genesis is well known, while others are of bad prognosis si~ce their pathogenesis is still unknown. |
