Abstract The aim of this essay was an approach towards the ery- throcyte sedimentation rate and to give an account on it’s nature, different methods of it’s determination and factors that affect it. One of our aims was to discuss the correla- tion of erythrocyte sedimentation rate with different physio- logical and pathological conditions, with special care of it’s variations in the pediatric age group of population. We tried also to evaluate the usefulness of erythrocyte sedimentation rate measurement. It was found that: * The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is expressed as the distance in millimeters per unit time (usually one hour) that red cells fall from the top of the blood column to the top of the layer of red cells. * The process of sedimentation consists of three phases, namely (1) a preliminary period during which aggregation of the red corpuscles takes place, (2) a period of rapid fall, and (3) the phase of packing when the corpuscular masses are accumulating at the bottom of the tube, slow up the rate of sedimentation. |
