Abstract anufacturing process selection is a difficult task. This difficulty arises due to the existence of many effective factors to implement the selection task accurately. These main factors are limited in the availability of large numbers of the developed manufacturing processes and materials, several product requirements (dimensions, dimensional tolerances, surface roughness) and specifications (shape configuration), production quantity, and the economical and environmental aspects. The present thesis covers the process selection for non-traditional machining processes (NTMPs) which include the mechanical processes: abrasive jet machining (AlM), water jet machining (WlM), abrasive water jet machining (A WlM), and ultrasonic machining (USM), the thermal processes: electrodischarge machining (EDM), electrodischarge milling (ED-Milling), wire electrodischarge machining (WEDM), laser beam machining (LBM), electron beam machining (EBM), and plasma beam machining (PBM), the chemical process: chemical machining (CHM), and the electrochemical process: electrochemical machining (ECM). These alternative processes are chosen to deal with various materials and several products. For the variety of the process selection factors and the alternatives as well, a program has been developed to perform this task. |
