Abstract This thesis draws attention to the concept of ‘ideology’, and how it is intentionally manipulated by translators in translating political texts from Arabic into English, not only to express their ideas and beliefs, but also those ideas and beliefs of the institutions to which they belong. Moreover, it sheds light on politics and culture in relation to translation. In other words, the thesis attempts to answer the question: Do ideology, politics and culture have an impact on translators through the process of translation? If yes, then manipulation of ideology is deliberately used. So, data for this study, represented in some Arabic political articles, is collected from different Arabic newspapers and websites. Also, the English translations of these Arabic political articles are collected from the website of The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). Then, a comparison is made between the Arabic texts and their English translations to clarify how translators of MEMRI, through manipulating the ideology of TRs, are able to spread the unjust image of the Arabs, justify the Israeli occupation of Palestine, defend the gloomy image of the Jews, and demonstrate the power of Israel in the Middle East. |
