Abstract The interaction of genetics and environment, nature and nurture is the foundation for all health and disease. Nutrition is an environmental factor of major importance. Major advances have occurred over the past years in the fields of both Genetics and Nutrition. Methodological advances in molecular biology and genetics have facilitated the study of inherited disease at the DNA level, and the study of nutrients at the molecular level. This has led to (1) the development of concepts and research on genetic variation due to genetic polymorphisms or single nucleotide polymorphisms and dietary response: Nutrigenetics (i.e. individuals responding differently to the same diet by having different levels of genetic variation); and to (2) studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet and the role of nutrients in gene expression: Nutrigenomics. Both novel concepts of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics are subdisciplines of the large novel discipline nutritional genomics. These concepts could provide a framework for the development of novel foods that will be genotype dependent for the promotion of health and prevention and management of chronic diseases. General dietary guidelines have been issued for the prevention of chronic diseases. In the development of dietary recommendations, the effects of genetic variation on dietary response have to be considered, because of this evidence. |
