Abstract Diabetics are likely to develop hypertension. Hypertension is twice as common in people with diabetes as in those without, and several studies suggest that 70% may be affected. Generally, hypertension in type 2 diabetic persons clusters with other CVD risk factors such as central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, This clustering risk factor in diabetic patients ultimately results in the development of CVD, which is the major cause of premature mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. So, the objectives of the current study were to assess the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Zagazig district hospitals, to study the common risk factors of type 2 diabetes and to identify its complications. A cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample size of 300 type 2 diabetic patients attending to Zagazig University and Al Ahrar Hospitals. The data were collected by different tools: i. A questionnaire, ii. Some clinical examination; where BMI was calculated and blood pressure was measured, iii. Laboratory investigations; blood samples were collected to detect blood levels of FBS, total cholesterol and triglycerides. In the current study there was a considerable evidence for an increased prevalence of hypertension in diabetic persons. Diabetic hypertensive patients had higher levels of SBP, DBP and BMI than diabetic non hypertensive ones. It was found that total cholesterol level , triglycerides and fasting blood sugar were statistically significantly higher among diabetic hypertensive patients than that among diabetic non hypertensive ones. Among the studied patients there was a lack of adequate knowledge about both symptoms and the complications of DM and there was no healthy practice regarding reaction with hyperglycemia, following diet regimen, practicing exercise, care of foot hygiene or regular check up investigations. |
