Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of betadine versus chamomile on pain relief and healing process of episiotomy among primiparae. A sample of (90) post partum women were selected from the postnatal unit of El-Shatby Maternity University Hospital in Alexandria according to the following criteria: primiparae, had a normal vaginal delivery with episiotomy, complaining of perineal discomfort (pain}, does not use any pain relieving drug, free from infection, free from diseases or health problems which may affect the healing process such as diabetes and have bathing facilities at home and willing to participate in the study. The selected subjects were equally divided into two study groups each group comprised “45” women. Each group was instructed to apply one of the treatment modalities namely: betadine and chamomile for 10 days duration. Three tools were used to collect the necessary data. The first tool was a structured interview schedule to elicit the Socio-demographic and clinical data of the participants such as age, level of education, occupation, residence, family income, housing condition, obstetric history as well as received antenatal care and current knowledge and practices about perineal care. The second tool was healing and pain assessment scale, which comprised two parts : part (a) : Reeda scale ( RS) and part (b) : Visual Analoge scale (VAS). This tool was used to provide baseline data regarding current signs and symptoms of perineal discomfort and perineal pain among the study subjects. The third tool was an observation follow up check-list to assess the healing process of episiotomy among the two groups. A pilot study was carried out on 10 women who were excluded from the study sample before embarking into the actual work. The aim of the pilot study was to test the validity; the clarity and the time needed to complete the tool.
