Abstract Diabetes is a chronic disease which is associated with serious complications. Absolute or relative insulin deficiency can result in ketosis. If left untreated, the latter can progress to ketoacidosis, a serious and sometimes fatal pathological condition. Mortality associated with ketoacidosis is between 3 and 4% of episodes in industrialized countries. The situation is of even greater concern in children in whom ketoacidosis is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity associated with diabetes worldwide |
