Abstract The present research calTies out a parametric study on a small scale heat exchanger by considering the change of the baffle cut, baffle spacing and the baffle arrangement. The effects of these parameters on the heat transfer and pressure DROP in a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger are investigated numerically. Various turbulent models are tested and the results are compared with the empirical data using Bell-Delaware and kern methods. Various configuration for the baffle segments have been investigated including single segmental, double segmental and cross segmental baffles in addition to the helical baffles segmental which is used to improve the perfonnance of heat exchangers. The relation between the coefficient of heat transfer by convection and the pressure DROP are used as indicators for the improved perfonnance of the investigated heat exchangers. The optimum arrangement has the minimum pressure DROP for the same heat transfer coefficient, less fouling and corrosion erosion which is helical baffle arrangement. |
