Abstract

End stage renal disease has many effects on all aspects of patients live such as physiological, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and social. Those patients usually having a lot of concerns and needs regarding their health problem, in addition they need to express theses concerns, so when caring and instructing the patients and their families, it is important to be aware of their concerns.
The present study aimed to, identify concerns of patients with end stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. The study was conducted at the hemodialysis units of the Alexandria Main University Hospital and Gamal Abdel Nasser Hospital (Health insurance) in Alexandria. (Egypt). Data was collected in a period of six months from 1/9/2009 to 1/3/2010, during all hemodialysis shifts. Also the data was collected by researcher with each patients individualized. The interview ranged from 20 – 45 minutes on individual session depending on the degree of tolerance and response of the patients. A convenient sample of 100 adult patients diagnosed with end stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis, according to the following criteria, both sexes, able to communicate verbally and after 6months of hemodialysis.
Tool of the study
Hemodialysis patient concern: structured interview schedule. It was developed by the researcher to identify concerns of those patients. It comprised of two parts:
Part I:
“Sociodemographic data and clinical data”: it recorded data about:
• Sociodemographic data:
It was intended to obtain information about clinical characteristics of the patients as sex, age, area of residence, ……….ect.
• Clinical data:
It was intended to obtain information about clinical history of the patients and their families as:
Family history: such as history of renal failure and its prognosis.
Patient’s history: as causes of pervious hospitalization, duration of management by HD, ect.
