Abstract

The present study was undertaken to improve the production of antibiotic, cephalosporin C, which produced by the fungus C. acremonium. Therefore, the following procedures were attempted :
1-Chemical and physical mutagens were used to induce mutants in C. acremonium.
2- The induced mutants were examined for their ability to produce the antibiotic cephalosporin C.
3-The auxotrophic mutants were examined for their nutritional requirements as well as the relationships between antibiotic productivity and requirements.
4-Some of the induced mutants were also tested for their resistance or sensitivity to four different auntifungal antibiotics.
5-Protoplast fusion was also applied for obtaining recombinant strains with high efficiency in producing the antibiotic under study.
6-Chromatography technique was used to study the antibiotic components in some of the induced mutants.
