Abstract

Neurocognitive impairments in schizophrenia are an area of research which is currently receiving much attention because they appear as early as the first episode of schizophrenia, and may even predate the onset of symptoms of the illness. Nevertheless, these impairments are still poorly understood, in particular its relation with the quality of life. This may be due to the preconceived notion that patients in their symptomatic state are unable to provide reliable information regarding their life quality. However, recently it was noted that clinically compliant and stable patients with schizophrenia can evaluate and report their quality of life with a high degree of reliability and concurrent validity. So, it is vital to psychiatric nurses to generate information from a patient’s perspective, that indicates clearly what areas of life functioning are impaired. Yet, nurses should be able to assess and understand impairments in cognitive functions in their patients and how these disturbances affect the quality of life of those patients.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between cognitive impairments and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia.
The study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of EL-Maamoura Hospital and Ras el Teen General Hospital.
The subjects of the study consisted of 200 patients with schizophrenia (190 males and 10 females). The convenient sampling technique was used by considering the following exclusion criteria.
