Abstract The aim of the study was to use the strain gauges technology to compare stresses induced on the supporting structures by the overdenture and telescopic retained partial denture. Anatomical model was fabricated simulating a mandibular edentulous case with remaining right canine which prepared to receive cast coping overdenture and replaced with another one which prepared to receive telescopic crown with metal arms over which telescopic overdenture was fabricated. Strain gauges were bonded to the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces of the remaining lower right canine .Loading points were selected on both sides of the prosthesis at the molars and canines area. Microstrain values were recorded at each loading point. The results showed that, the overdenture showed higher loads on all the surfaces when compared with the values of telescopic overdenture. The use of telescopic crown in retaining removable prosthesis produce excellent retention resulting from the frictional fit between the crown and the sleeve ,that provide better force distribution due to circumferential retention of the outer crown to the abutment which make axial transfer of occlusal load that produce less rotational torque on the abutment by improving the crown root ratio so the tooth and alveolar bone would be preserved. from these results we concluded that, it is recommended to make further investigations regarding the use of telescopic retained partial denture to manage the cases of single remaining canine. |
