Abstract This experiment was designated to study the effect of peppermint (mentha piperita) on hypercholesterolemic rats. 45 male rats weighing 188.09 ±10 (g) were classified into control (-ve) and 8 hypercholesterolemic rat groups fed on unsaturated fats, saturated fats and egg yolk powder : two groups of them served as control (+ve) while the rest of them were classified into three groups fed on unsaturated fats and egg yolk and treated with mentha oil, extract and powder. 3 rat groups fed on saturated fats and egg yolk and treated with mentha oil, extract and powder. In each group was 5 rats .The period of the experiment was 45 days. The female rats weighing 139.40±10 (g) and were classified as the same distribution of male rat groups. In comparing with control (+ve) group, the obtained results revealed that male and female rat groups which treated with mentha oil, extract and powder showed improvement in nutritional and some kidney and liver function. Also, they showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total lipids , phospholipids and atherogenic indexes but significant increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol. Moreover, they showed significant decrease in malondialdehyde and significant increase in superoxide dismutase, glutathione and progesterone but non significant difference of testosterone. |
