Abstract Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is immunosuppressive drug which has some side effects such as gastrointestinal complications , malignancies , stomatitis and gingival enlargement and bleeding. Aim of the work: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of N-acetyl cystiene( NAC) on expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in gingiva of albino rats receiving Mycophenolate mofetil. Methods: Fifty four adult male albino rats with healthy gingiva were selected and divided into 3 equal groups. control group received no treatment, other two groups received MMF, one of them received MMF and NAC respectively. The required mandibular gingiva of each rat was excised, prepared for immunohistochemical staining for VEGF. Results: There was an increase in the thickness of epithelium and increased connective tissue fibers in MMF treated groups, while the gingiva of rats that received both MMF and NAC showed normal epithelial thickness and connective tissue with normal arrangement of fibroblasts, collagen fibers, and blood vessels. Conclusion: NAC may be benefacial in overcoming the gingival overgrowth caused by immunosuppressive drugs. |
