Abstract ♦ Introduction: - With the AIDS pandemic, opportunistic infections with the coccidian parasite Toxoplasma gondii become predominantely a problem of the poor, under developed as well as developed countries. However, this protozoon has received less than what deserve concerning effort towards the development of new drug armamentarium and vaccines. Drugs currently in use has been developed decades ago, showed variable efficacy and serious side effects and required long term use. This represents a gaping deficiency in our aspiration to control toxoplasmosis, a matter which clearly indicates the pressing need for creating new methods of control and prevention. Genotyping studies that distinguish different types of strains are important to gain knowledge of the biodiversity of Toxoplasma gondii and to trace its zoonotic sources which are the millistones in its control agenda. ♦ Aim of Work: - 1- Morphology and life cycle of Toxoplasma gondii. 2- Mainfestations of Toxoplasma infections. 3- Toxoplasma gondii lineages. 4- Molecular aspect of Toxoplasma lineages. 5- Immune response to Toxoplasma gondii . ♦ Conclusion: - The goal of this essay is to further our understanding of the different lineages of Toxoplasma gondii and address the relevance of these lineages to the epidemiological, pathological, molecular and immunological aspects of Toxoplasma gondii. |
