Abstract This study was designed to assess subjective sleep quality, polysomnographic assessment of sleep architecture and sleep continuity after cerebrovascular stroke, correlate these results with the disease severity and determine the effective diagnostic approach for the conditions; for better management and subsequently better quality of life. The present study included 60 subjects, divided into 2 groups, group 1 which involves 30 patients with subacute ischemic cerebrovascular stroke, and group (2) which involves 30 control subjects. Each patient in this study was subjected to: clinical assessment, neuro-imaging, sleep questionnaire, sleep-apnea history was taken by means of Berlin Questionnaire, nocturnal polysomnography. However Control group were subjected to: Complete physical and neurological examination, sleep Questionnaire, nocturnal polysomnography. The results showed that: 1-No significant differences between stroke patients and control group regarding demographic and risk factors (Age, sex, hypertension, cholesterol level, and obesity), except for smoking, DM and cardiac diseases, which were significant more in stroke patients group. 2-By applying sleep questionnaire on stroke patients group, we found that 20% of stroke patients suffered from insomnia (Mainly initial insomnia), 40% of stroke patients suffered from day-time hyper somnolence and 33.3% suffered from parasomnia. 3- No significant difference between stroke patients and control subjects regards sleep onset and number of awakening, but results confirmed that. |
