Abstract This dissertation proposes a framework, which was called the ”Exterior Lighting Framework” (ELF), and a systematic methodology and procedure to design tbe exterior lighting of buildings and their surrounding environment. The proposed methodology embraces diverse areas of research that include: the facade architectural design, the site approach (the exterior site approach and the adjacent spaces / the interior site approach with its landscape), exterior lighting techniques, and technical factors that affect the design of the exterior lighting. The framework application process includes six phases to generate the lighting design. These phases involve investigation and analysis, design, selection, verification, assessment, and accomplishment. These phases, except for the investigation and analysis phase, are not carried out in a sequential manner but rather in a continuous back and forth movement between the different steps as the design progresses and evolves. Afterwards, the proposed methodology is verified through an application study which involves the design of the exterior lighting of two Egyptian heritage buildings. |
