Abstract The Pentacam is a rotating Scheimpflug camera which captures Scheimpflug images of the anterior eye segment. The Scheimpflug technique provides sharp and crisp images that include information from the anterior corneal surface to the posterior crystalline capsule. The rotating camera supplies anterior segment images in three dimensions, creating a movable three-dimensional presentation of the anterior chamber. The centre of the cornea is measured very precisely because of this rotating imaging process, which takes less than two seconds and corrects the slightest eye movements. The Pentacam allows fast, noncontact examination of the anterior eye segment while the patient is sitting in front of the camera, thus providing good patient comfort and preventing application of local anesthetics and corneal erosions. Summary and Conclusion 88 The pentacam is the only instrument that measures and analyses the center of the cornea precisely. This offers a significant advantage in accurate corneal topography measurements prior to refractive surgery. For calculating corneal thickness, the camera measures from the top of the epithelium to the anterior surface of the endothelium. So pentacam is indispensable pre and post-refractive surgery. The Pentacam calculates a three dimensional mathematical model of the anterior segment to provide the following information: Anterior and posterior corneal topography and elevation maps Corneal pachymetry from limbus to limbus 3D-chamber analyzing (ACD-map, chamber angle, chamber volume etc.) Lens density (quantification of the light transmittance of the crystalline lens and IOL’s) Improved IOL-calculation for post LASIK and PRK patients. Summary and Conclusion 89 While summing up all the features of the Pentacam is the optimum analyzer for: Corneal refractive surgeons Cataract refractive surgeons Glaucoma screening |
