Abstract This study aimed to detect the serum levels of copper and zinc in children with iron deficiency anemia and to compare theses levels with those of healthy children and to investigate the relationship between trace elements and hematological parameters in patients and control. Summary and Conclusion Eighty five patients who was selected from outpatient clinic of Minia Pediatric University Hospital in the period from May to December 2011,were included in this study there were divided into two groups Group1 included 51 children with iron deficiency anemia with age ranged from 1-10 years. Group2 included 34 apparently healthy children with age ranged from 1-10yrears. All children subjected to complete history taking ,thorough clinical examination and laboratory investigation by CBC, serum iron, serum ferritin, serum zinc and serum copper level. In this study the serum zinc levels in the iron deficient group were significantly lower than those of the control group p value =0.001. In iron deficiency anemic group there were significant positive correlation between serum zinc and serum iron p value=0.02. The serum copper levels in the iron deficient group were significantly higher than those of the control .There were significant negative correlation between serum copper and both of serum ferritin and Hb level with p value= 0.001. And there was no significant correlation between serum copper and serum zinc in children with iron deficiency anemia. |
