Abstract This study included 47 patients with thyroid carcinoma admitted and treated at department of surgery, Tanta University Hospital over 3 years duration from October 1996 to October 1999. Distribution of cases according to sex revealed that thyroid carcinoma reported in 10 males and 37 female with an incidence of male to female ratio of 1 : 3.7. Among our cases the least reported age was 7 years in a male patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma and the highest age was a female 72 years old with anaplastic carcinoma. Carcinoma of the thyroid was diagnosed preoperatively by FNA cytology in 23 cases and by CNB in 3 cases for whom FNAC was inconclusive .
