Abstract This study was carried out at Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute (GEBRI) ,Sadat City, Minofia University during the period from 2007-2011 . Nepeta septemcrenata Benth. is a rare endemic Egyptian plant with a restricted habitat, reportedly found only in three separated localities in Saint Katherine protectorate. Efforts to preserve this species should be carried out to prevent its extinction and ensure its survival, and to take advantage of its valuable biotechnological potential. Measures to develop micropropagation protocols for this endangered shrub with high field survival are essential. Plant tissue culture is considered, nowadays, as a unique and valuable tool for growing plant cell, tissue and organ culture and as a production system with secondary products available when and where required. This study aimed to utilize plant tissue culture as a source of pharmaceutical compounds, instead of import from abroad especially after the application of General Agreement on Tariffs(GAT) . |
