Abstract

Expert systems as an application of Intelligent computing is a powerful tool
which tries to gain an understanding of how human experts solve problems .Using ESs
in strategic planning is critical because it requires taking managerial decisions which are
highly dependent on human expertise .The present study attempts to achieve the
following objectives: To assess the importance of planning process in five star hotels.
To assess the capability of strategic thinking in five star hotels. To investigate the
intelligent systems used in supporting hotel strategic planning. To tailor an intelligent
system for hotel strategic planning. The main results were that the levels of hotel
management that have a formalized strategic planning system was divided into three
levels, where the corporate and the business level have a fully formalized strategic
planning system, but the third one was partially applying these formalized systems.
Barriers affect using intelligent systems in hotels was divided into arranged five types,
where the first was financial barriers, secondly the technological barriers, thirdly
political barriers, fourthly social barriers, finally law and regulations barriers. There is a
high positive correlation between using intelligent systems and the effectiveness of
hotel strategic planning.
Finally, the study proposed two models; the first model is An Expert system (ES)
that supports the judgmental reasoning and knowledge of hotel managers. The second
one is an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that supports the judgmental forecasting and
knowledge of hotel managers.
