Abstract Lung diseases are some of the most common medical conditions worldwide. In this study, two critical lung diseases were evaluated for searching for proper preventive measures against their damages. These two diseases are acute lung injury and silica-induced fibrosis. Three compounds where evaluated against these diseases; which are agmatine, methyl palmitate and lutein Agmatine possesses both anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects; this was shown in both models as it managed to attenuate LPS-induced ALI and silica-induced lung fibrosis. This could be attributed mainly to its ability to inhibit nitric oxide release, or it could be also due to its effect in suppressing cytokine release as TNF-α, its antioxidant effects and its ability to decrease collagen deposition. Methyl palmitate also possesses both anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects, this was shown in both models where it managed to attenuate LPS-induced ALI and silica-induced lung fibrosis. These effects could be explained by the ability of methyl palmitate to decrease inflammatory cytokines mainly and its ability to decrease the NO level, collagen deposition, and its antioxidant effect. Lutein possesses anti-inflammatory effect which was evident in its ability to protect against LPS-induced ALI, and its ability to protect against silica-induced lung fibrosis without affecting collagen deposition. Its mechanism mainly was due to its potent antioxidant effect alongside with its effect in decreasing NO release and inflammatory cytokines release. |
