Abstract Abstract Childbirth is the most painful event in a woman’s life, and methods used to relieve pain are the major concerns of child bearing women and their family. Certain levels of fear and anxiety about childbirth are expected, especially among first-time mothers. However, problems arise when these feelings negatively impact a woman’s decisions and perceptions about the birth process. In seeking ways to improve nursing care and consequent outcomes for childbearing women, it was found that the childbirth classes was an important way to increase self-efficacy in coping with labor pain. This study was designed to investigate the effect of child birth preparation on self efficacy in coping with labor pain in primiparas. The study sample comprised two groups, study group of (N=50) pregnant women who received child birth preparation classes and control group of (N=50) women who received routine prenatal care in maternal and child health center (MCH). This study used a structured interview questionnaire, a pre and post knowledge questionnaire, a child birth self- efficacy inventory tool, a visual analoge scale, and Apgar score. The study findings revealed that there was more significant statistical increase regarding self efficacy score in the women who participated in the child birth classes (case group) than women who received routine prenatal care in MCH (control group) after intervention and during follow-up. The study recommended that child birth preparation classes should be established in all MCH centers as a routine antenatal care to increase awareness of pregnant women especially primigravidas about labor where these classes effect on self efficacy and labor pain. |
