Abstract The 2-methyl-3, 1-(4H)-benzoxazin-4-one (L1),7, 9-dichloro-2-methyl-3, 1-(4H)-benzoxazin-4-one (L2) and 2-methyl-quinazolinone (L3)ligandsreacted with some of transition elements such as Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Y(III),Zr(IV) and La(III). The isolated solid complexes were established usingelemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis., mass spectra, melting point, molar conductivity, magnetic properties as well as thermogravimetric analyses. The results enable us to characterize the complexes and make an assessment of the bonding and structures inherent in them. All the prepared complexes contain water molecules and the number of bound water molecules in these complexes being different. Based on the data obtained the complexes were formulated as [Mn(L1)2(H2O)2]SO4,[Co(L1)2(H2O)2]Cl2.5H2O, [Ni(L1)2(H2O)2](CH3COO)2.4H2O, [Zn(L1)2(H2O)2]SO4.3H2O, [ZrO(L1)2(H2O)Cl]Cl.4H2O,[Mn(L2)2(H2O)2]SO4.2H2O, [Co(L2)2(H2O)2]Cl2.6H2O,[Ni(L2)2(H2O)2](CH3COO)2.4H2O,[ZrO(L2)2Cl]Cl.4H2O,[Co(L3)2(H2O)2]Cl2, [Ni(L3)2(H2O)2](CH3COO)2, [Y(L3)2(H2O)2]Cl3, [ZrO(L3)2(H2O)2Cl]Cl.H2O and[La(L3)2(H2O)2]Cl3.With acolor characteristic of each metal ion. The infrared spectra of the isolated solid complexes indicated that (L1) reacts as a monodentate ligand through the nitrogen atom and not the oxygen atom of carbonyl group, while (L2) reacts as abidentate ligand through the nitrogen and chlorine atoms formingsix membered ringswith the metal ions and (L3) reacts as a monodentate ligand through theoxygen atom of carbonyl group and not nitrogen atom. Thethermal analysis data and the vibrational spectra of the final decomposition products indicate that the complexes finally decomposed to the corresponding metal oxides or sulphate. Antimicrobial studies were carried out against several bacterial species, such as Staphylococcusaureus(S. aureus), Bacillus subtilus(B. subtilus) andEnterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) as a gram positive bacteriaand Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonasaeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) and Salmonellatyphimurim(S. typhimurim) as a gram negative bacteria. The results showed significant increase in antibacterial activity of metal complexes as compared with uncomplexed ligand. This increase in the activity is being considereddue to increased bioavailability of the metal complexes. |
