Abstract This work aimed to study hydatid disease in dromedary camel at Aswan governorate. For this purpose, a total of 6192 camels in abattoirs of Aswan governorate were examined pre- and post-mortem. The results showed that out of 6192 camels examined in Aswan governorate, the prevalence of hydatid cyst through out 5 years examination (2008-2012) was 10.2%, 8.19%, 4.91%, 4.33% and 10.2% respectively with an overall mean of 7.17 %. The lung is the target organ of hydatidosis in the studied camels, where 6.57 % of camels had cyst in the lung. Only 0.37 % of camels had hydatid infection in the liver and 0.23 % had hydatid infection in the spleen. Also, 0.1 % of camels had multiple organ infection. Summer showed higher prevalence than other seasons. Sex of camel affect the prevalence of hydatidosis in camels, where females has a higher infection percentage than males. Also, the prevalence of infection by hydatid cyst is affected by age of camels, where older camels (> 5 years) are more affected by hydatidosis than young camels (< 5 years). This study proved that the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test is a useful screening immunological test. The study on 485 camel sera (159 confirmed positive cases in the PM and 325 confirmed negative control samples), the IHA showed 85.53 % sensitivity, 97.55 % specificity , and 93.61 % accuracy. So, IHA is considered as a good serological test used for accurate diagnosis of hydatidosis in the camel. The hematological studies showed that hydatidosis in camels had no significant effect on the red blood cell parameters (RBC cont, Hb and PCV) However, the leucogram showed increased total leucocytic count (Leucocytosis) in addition to lymphocytosis, eosinophilia and neutropenia. Therefore, an effort should be made to control the transmission of cystic echinococcosis from slaughterhouses by the safe disposal of infected offal of camels. This will significantly reduce the transmission of cysts from slaughterhouses to definitive hosts in this region. |
