Abstract Caring for family member with psychiatric illness is enduring stressor and causes considerable amount of burden .Families are an integral part of the care system for person with a chronic psychiatric illness. The demands of being involved in the care of seriously psychiatric ill relatives have both an emotional and practical impact on the caregiver. The cost that families incur in terms of economic hardships ,social isolation and psychological strain ,are referred to as family burden. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the psychosocial burden among family caregiver of psychiatric patients : prevalence and its impact on their quality of life. Method: This is descriptive cross sectional study carried out on both 400 family caregivers of psychiatric patients in the in-patient Psychiatric Department of Mansoura University Hospital. Results: The age of the studied caregivers ranged from 40 and above 60 years, with a mean age of 41.337± 1.23 years. Female caregivers constitute highly positive burden, males caregiver constitute low quality of life and statistically significant correlation was found between burden and total quality of life. Conclusion: It can concluded from the present study that the majority of studied family caregivers are females, low educational level, low income and housewives. The majority of the studied sample complaining from positive burden and low quality of life. The level of burden and low quality of life reported by caregivers of psychiatric patients were high and their prevalence estimated that 91.8% ,92.5% respectively .So it is recommended to Psycho educational program is needed to assist caregivers cope effectively with their burden and enhance their quality of life The government should exert efforts to enhance health insurance to cover the cost of treatment of psychiatric patients to decrease caregiver burden especially financial burden. |
