Abstract
The growth of urban private vehicle traffic has led to serious traffic congestion in most cities. Since travel demand increases at a rate regularly greater than the addition of road capacity, the situation will continue to decline unless better traffic management strategies are implemented such as the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ITS is the application of technologies to transportation systems and the careful integration of system functions to provide more efficient and effective solutions to multimodal transportation problems. Traffic simulation models have proven to be one of the most cost-effective tools to reach these objectives.
