Educational system is characterized by rapidly increase in numbers of learners in these days. This leads to widening the individual differences among them ; moreover the classes specially in the basic education stage included many pupils that are different in their abilities for learning, some are superiors, the others are normal and some have learning disabilities, so it is necessary to provide a suitable educational environment for these pupils with their different abilities considering that the basic education stage is the substrate and the basic root for subsequent education stages.
Learning disabilities is one of the educational problems that many pupils are suffering from, as pupils with learning disabilities show a remarkable decline in achievement comparing with their normal colleagues in one aspect or more which negatively affects on their overall performance, in spite of being not commensurate with their mental abilities in studying.
Paying attention to pupils with learning disabilities in the basic education stage resulted from what were educators observed from a numbers of pupils who are enrolling in public education, but they don’t cope with their peers in learning the concepts and skills involved in the curriculum and various courses. Also, they don’t show any indicators of sensory, physical or mental imbalance; they are often characterized by a normal or more than average intelligence.
Pupils with learning disabilities don’t suffer from psychological problems, physical, mental or sensory (auditory, optical) disabilities or healthy problems. Also, they don’t suffer from cultural or family deprivation, but they suffer from mental disorders that include attention, memory, perception and concept formation. This leads to deficiency in learning concepts and basic skills whether in the primary school or other education stages.
Lack of facilities within the school such as lack of appropriate technological teaching aids, difficulty of the curriculum, lack of clear objectives of teaching, failure of the curriculum to meet tendencies and attitudes of learners are considered from the main closely related reasons and factors that contribute to learning disabilities.
Concepts represent an important component of social studies content. Also its acquisition and learning is considered one of its teaching goals because this helps to organize historical and geographical facts and phenomena and put them in comprehensive concepts which help the learners in comprehension and understanding.
