Abstract End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has become a public health concern worldwide as the total number of ESRD patients requiring renal replacement therapy has been growing dramatically. The main problem in developing countries is lack and inaccuracy of data registry. Also there are no available epidemiological reports for different parts of the country. In Menofia governorate there is no peritoneal dialysis or transplant program and hemodialysis represent the main mode of treatment for ESRD. Although hemodialysis was initiated more than 3 decades in Menofia governorate there is no reports depicted epidemiological characteristics of this group of patients in this area of the country. Menofia is considered a rural region lying in delta area of Egypt. In our study five districts were chosen by simple random sample of Menoufia governorate and all the patients in the renal dialysis center on chronic hemodialysis in each district were involved in our study. Due to the frequency of renal dialysis (3 times per week) the patients always seek the nearby center. So these patients almost represent all patients in these districts. This study was done from May 2013 to October 2013. Our study showed that the prevalence of ESRD patients on hemodialysis in Menoufia governorate is 330 pmp. |
