Abstract Workplace violence (WPV) is the most complex and dangerous occupational hazards of health care environment. It produces physical and emotional impact on the employee morale, productivity, absenteeism, use of sick leave time and requests for transfers. The aim of this study was to manage workplace violence against nurses working in Emergency Hospital at Mansoura University. Design: A descriptive research design. Setting: This study was conducted in all, inpatient & outpatient units at Emergency Hospital at Mansoura University. Subjects: A random sample technique was used to recruit 178 nurses and 26 head nurses. Tools of data collection: Three tools were used: 1) Nurse’s perception about factors contributing to workplace violence, 2) Nurses’ perception of workplace violence types, perpetrators and rate of experiencing each type in the emergency hospital. Perception on the effects of workplace violence on their performance and nurses’ perception on head nurses’ reaction toward workplace violence, and 3) Head nurses’ perceptions on their activities for preventing and managing workplace violence against nurses. Conclusion: nurses at the Emergency Hospital at Mansoura University experienced different forms of workplace violence (verbal psychological, physical and sexual) from visitors and patients. Work-organizational, personal, and societal factors were contributing to workplace violence. Experiencing workplace violence induces nurses to feel powerless and helpless. Nurses found head nurses had negative and aggressive behavior with workplace victims. While head nurses perceived their role against workplace violence as they assess the work environment and maintain high level of nursing practice. Recommendations: The nurses should be taught about violence detection, intervention and prevention activities. Work environment should be designed to be safe for both patients and nurses. In addition to the head nurses should develop policies and training programs and ensure punishment for preventing and managing workplace violence against nurses. |
