Abstract Background: Adolescence is a period of stress and internal turmoil. It is risky phase of development with increase vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Achenbach et al had differentiated between internalizing and externalizing problems of adolescents. Understanding risk factors and processes of them is important as the identification of adolescents in need of early intervention, in addition, identification of protective factors and processes of resilience may help to strengthen those at greatest risk.Method: the study evaluated 400 adolescents, 200 in patents’ group and the rest is in control group. This study was cross sectional case-control design by using M.I.N.I KID, WISC, PAQ, IPFI, Parenting style questionnaire, questionnaire of child abuse experiences during childhood and m GAF scale.Results: Externalizing disorders more prevalent in young age, boys were more prone to externalizing disorders, while girls prone to internalizing disorders. Both internalizing and externalizing disorders are more prevalent in rural areas. The study clarifies predictors of internalizing disorders, they are; assertiveness, paternal physical abuse, cooperation and paternal volatility, peer ATOD use and maternal physical abuse. While predictors of externalizing disorders are self-control, risk behaviors, emotional instability, positive peer effect, paternal and maternal overcontrolling and discrimination, and maternal volatility, maternal and paternal physical abuse, maternal volatility , age, low self-esteem , self concept, inadequacy, school bonding, AOD exposure, assertiveness, lack emotional responsiveness, self-efficacy, aggression, confidence, cooperation, dependency, peer use AOD, maternal and paternal overprotection, maternal and paternal positive parenting, maternal and parental psychological abuse , and sexual abuse, family size, family supervision and bonding, positive outlook, AOD use, attitude towards alcohol and drugs.Conclusion: internalizing and externalizing disorders are associated with different risk factors and different variables. |
