Abstract

A thoracotomy is an incision into the pleural space of the chest. It is performed by surgeons to gain access to the thoracic organs. Thoracotomies are thought to be one of the most difficult surgical incisions to deal with post-operatively, because they are extremely painful and the pain can prevent the patient from breathing effectively, leading to atelectasis or pneumonia.
There are many types of thoracic Incisions : posterolateral thoracotomy, anterolateral thoracotomy, Median Sternotomy, thoraco-abdominal incisions, lateral muscle sparing thoracotomy, axillary,antero-axillary and anterior limited thoracotomy.
The aim of the study was to, evaluate the efficacy and applicability of antero-axillary thoracotomy in lung resections and comparing between this approach and the traditional postero-lateral thoracotomy with regards efficacy, applicability, operative time and postoperative complications including pain, wound problems, shoulder dysfunction and respiratory problems.
A prospective comparative study was done to fulfill the objectives of this study.
The sample included 20 patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Alexandria Main University Hospital with lung pathology requiring lung resection, with no specific inclusion criteria regarding: sex, age, medical history or environmental exposure.
Exclusion criteria: Cases with advanced lung cancer invading the chest wall.
