Abstract Starch was grafted with vinyl monomers (Acrylamide,Methyl methacrylate and Acrylonitrile) in presence of visible light at room temperature using redox initiator systems (Moher’s salt/Hydrogen peroxide, Mohr’s salt/Potassium persulphate and Potassium permanganate/Nitric acid, respectively). For every monomer, the effects of reaction time, starch content, monomer concentration and initiator were studied. The resulting copolymers were characterized using various methods such as IR, X-Ray,SEM and thermal analysis (TGA & DTA). Also, the products hydrophilicity was tested in addition to their chemical resistance towards different solvents. |
