Abstract

Marianne Moore (1887-1972) is an innovative modernist poet. This is evident in both the themes she handled and the techniqual devices she used in her poetry. This thesis is divided into three chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. Chapter one examines modernism as a literary movement. It traces the great events that took place in modern era such as World Wars, The Industrial Revolution and the development of science. All these events helped in shaping Modern man’s beliefs and outlook to life. Chapter two investigates some of the modern themes in the poetry of Moore. It shows her preoccupation with modern man’s alienation from his family, society and God. It examines the theme of discrimination because of race and gender and women’s attempts to free themselves from the shekels of men. Chapter three presents some of the modern techniques used by Moore such as animal imagery, free verse and syllabic verse. Then the thesis ends with a conclusion that sum up the thesis.
