Abstract

In these days human resource is one the most valuable organization asset providing competitive advantages for health care setting. Complex relationships in hospital which cause interaction between nursing leaders and their subordinates along with their different thoughts, conceptions and believes make “conflict” an inevitable part of today health care organizations life. One of the important areas in organization conflict attracting researchers’ attention is influence of leadership styles on conflict management strategies due to its role in the failure or success of an organization.
Aim of the study: The present study was aimed to determine relation between leadership styles and conflict management strategies of head nurses at Mansoura University Hospital.
Materials and Method: Data collection tools were including two tools; Multi factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory -II (Rahim, 2010, 1983).Multi factor Leadership Questionnaireis used to measures a wider range of leadership styles.Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory -IIIt is used to determine nature, reasons and strategies for conflict resolution.
Results: Results revealed that there was a highly statistically significant correlation were found between integrating, obliging and compromising conflict strategies practice with three leadership styles.The highest degree of opinion score related to practice of transformational leadership followed by laissez faire and transactional leadership.Most of the conflicts arise in hospital is dysfunctional among all (administrators, staff and each other) and miscommunication is the dominant reason of conflict.Integrating strategy has the highly degree of opinion scores followed by obliging and dominating.
Recommendation: Designing and implementing educational program on conflict management strategies and leadership styles to manage work related conflict effectively.Watch for deviations from rules and standards and taking corrective action to prevent mistakes to increase management by exception active. Good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the nursing team members in order to improve relations and manage conflict successfully.Promote critical thinking and the scientific method to solve problems by providing opportunities for staff nurses to express their opinion and participation in the development of new ideas and non-traditional solutions to improve performance.
