Abstract

A cross sectional study was conducted during the period from February 2013 till June 2015 to investigate the sero-prevalence of brucellosis and the associated risk factors in a dairy cattle farm in Dakhlia Governorate to develop a realistic plan for control of a disease in dairy herds. Samples were collected from animals and their surrounding environment followed by serological, bacteriological and molecular examination of these samples. A total of 520 serum samples of cattle were screened by BAPAT & RBT and were further confirmed with I-ELISA and CFT. The overall serological prevalence derived from the samples was 16.15, 14.42, 10.57 and 6.92 % by BAPAT, RBT, I-ELISA and CFT, respectively. The association between serological tests using agreement between tests (Kappa Statistic) indicated that RBPT and BAPAT had excellent agreement (Kappa=0.93). The highest rate of agreement between the results of RBPT and BAPAT among tested animals means that should be supported by other confirmatory serological tests. The prevalence was relatively higher in older cows (>4years), parities (>4) and higher in pregnant cows followed by heifers and lactating one. Bacteriological detection of Brucella abortus (biovar 1) in different organs of aborted foeti including liver, spleen, lung and stomach content were 14.28% (one out of 7), 57.14% (4 out of 7), 42.86% (3 out of 7) and 28.57% (2 out of 7), respectively. Dettol is the antiseptics of choice for hand workers and veterinarians in farms while Virkon S (Potassium peroxy-monosulfate and sodium chloride, 1%), Sumasol (chlorinated powder, 0.6%) and TH4 (Quaternary ammonium compounds) are disinfectants of choice for the control of brucellosis in dairy cattle farms. A control program for brucellosis in dairy farms should be based on routine testing and slaughter of sero-positive cows and vaccination of all female animals accompanied by application of hygienic measures.
