Abstract Ground penetrating radars GPRs uses the latest ground penetrating technology to provide critical information on utilities, concrete, metals, landmines, and other potential problem areas within existing structures or underground. Specifically, GPRs will plot the location of subsurface obstructions directly onto the surface, giving the contractor a clear indication of where it is safe to drill, cut, or dig and where extra caution is necessary. Additionally, using GPRs will make it safe and cost-effective. Antenna measurement techniques refer to the testing of antennas to ensure that the antenna meets specifications or simply to characterize it. Typical parameters of antennas are gain, radiation pattern, beam width, polarization, and impedance. All these parameters can be extracted from the radiation pattern measurement of the radiation elements either single antenna element or antenna arrays. For these reasons, our efforts are devoted to introduce hardware implementations of a proposed ground penetrating radar system. In this thesis, a simple GPR system is designed, tested, and implemented using microstrip technology. An ultrawide band (UWB) microstrip antenna element is investigated in order to extend the GPR frequency range, which indeed gives the GPR system the ability to detect objectives at wide range of penetrating depths with controllable resolution. |
