Abstract

Obesity is one of the five leading causes of death all over the world. It is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that represents a risk to health with a BMI of 30 kg /m2 or more. Obesity not only increases the risk for chronic health conditions among elderly such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol level, cardiovascular disease and stroke, but also leading to limitation in functional ability of elderly which enhance the age process and can lead to dependency and decrease quality of life. Aim of the study: This study aimed to determine relationship between obesity and functional ability of elderly attending Geriatric outpatient clinics in Mansoura City. Materials and Method: Descriptive, correlational cross sectional hospital based research design was used. The study carried out on 126 elderly attending Geriatric Outpatient Clinics in the Specialized Medical Hospital and General Hospital in Mansoura City. data was collected using 5 tools, Socio demographic and Clinical data structured interview sheet, Health promoting Lifestyle profile II (HPLPII) , Anthropometric Measurements, Assessment of the basic activities of daily living and Assessment the instrumental activities of daily living. Results: Results revealed that the prevalence of obesity among elderly people at geriatric outpatient’s clinics in Mansoura City was 33.3% and 25.4 % of the elderly had mild obesity. The mean BMI score decreases with age and female had mean BMI score higher than male. there was no statistical significant relation between obesity and marital status, residence, level of education and occupation before retirement and living condition .the elderly who dependant on pension as source of income had high BMI than others. There was statistical significant relation between BMI, waist circumference, waist / hip ratio and functional ability of elderly. Recommendation: Based on the results of the present study there is an increasing need to development and implementation of physical rehabilitation programs for obese elderly patients to improve their functional abilities.
